As a business owner or nonprofit leader, you likely wear many hats. And on any given day, your attention is most likely pulled in multiple directions. Staying focused on your priorities can feel like an uphill battle.

Juggling day-to-day operations, marketing your products and services, building strategic alliances, implementing your strategic planning, all while dealing with customers, clients, employees, government regulations, and financial entities, can leave you frazzled, wondering where the time went, and puzzled about how to make time to focus on your priorities.

A Lesson from the Field: Mindset in Action

A nonprofit director, one of my clients, came to me because he felt scattered. His days were spent reacting to emails, putting out fires, and “chasing funding” without a clear path forward.

Together, we paused to examine his mindset.

He realized he was being reactive instead of proactive. He told me, "I have to do everything.” We reframed that thought to: “I choose to focus on what moves the mission forward.”

With that shift, he identified three core initiatives and began structuring his days and weeks around them. The result? He secured a grant he’d previously overlooked and regained a sense of purpose and calm.

Here are three mindset shifts that will help you get focused and stay focused. The result: increased productivity, progress towards your goals, and a feeling of calm and accomplishment. Try them.

1. Shift from “busy” to “intentional”
Instead of measuring your success by how much you get done, measure your success by whether you're working on what matters.

2. Let go of the myth of multitasking
Multitasking drains your focus and reduces quality. Try single-tasking for 25 minutes. Take a short break and begin another 25-minute session. Track what you have accomplished.

3. Adopt a growth mindset about distraction
Everyone gets distracted. The difference is whether you return to focus with grace or spiral into guilt. Train your inner voice to encourage, not criticize.

The Daily Focus Reset

At the start of each day, ask yourself:

  • What three tasks will move me closer to my goal today?

  • What distractions do I need to be aware of?

  • How will I manage them?

Write your answers down. Keep them where you can easily see them. Revisit them when your energy dips or your attention wanders.

This small habit can rewire your brain so you stay aligned with your priorities and protect your focus from the daily distractions and noise.
