Creative Problem Solving: 5 Techniques to Boost Your Innovative Thinking

As Q2 unfolds, the urgency to make meaningful progress toward year-end goals begins to build. But what happens when your momentum slows or roadblocks arise? You could find yourself stuck, overwhelmed, or at risk of burnout.

That’s where using creativity to solve your problem steps in—as a practical, results-driven tool for solving challenges in innovative ways.

What Is Creative Problem-Solving?

Creative problem-solving is more than just thinking outside the box. It’s a structured approach to finding fresh, effective solutions when traditional approaches fall short. It helps you:

  • Explore open-ended questions and solutions
  • Generate new ideas and perspectives
  • Collaborate more effectively with your team
  • Identify the root cause of persistent problems before solving the problem
  • Move forward with clarity and confidence
  • Reframe problems as questions

Why It Matters in Q2

It’s during Q2 that challenges or problems can begin surfacing as you increase your efforts on your goals.

Whether you are dealing with a project that is behind schedule or over budget, struggling with engagement, or unsure how to reach a bold new goal, creativity offers a path forward. Creative problem-solving can reduce stress and overwhelm, increase your results, and prevent burnout.

Techniques to Spark Creative Thinking

Here are a five proven approaches to introduce more creativity into your Q2 problem-solving sessions:

1. Brainstorm with a clear purpose in mind: Focus on the quantity of ideas before quality. Use prompts like “What’s a wild idea we haven’t tried?” Or, ” What is the root cause of this problem?”

2. “Yes, and…” mindset: Build on each idea rather than shooting ideas down too early. Respond to an idea by saying, “Yes, and" then build on the idea. This encourages collaboration and communication

3. Use divergent and convergent thinking: Start by expanding possibilities (divergent), then narrow in on the best solutions (convergent).

4. Fishbone diagrams: This brainstorming process gets to the root cause of a problem before jumping to solutions. I’ve used it many times during strategic planning projects. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has a good description of the process and benefits. You may be familiar with Cause-and-Effect diagrams, which are similar to fishbone diagrams.

5. Change your environment: Try meeting in a different space or walking while talking. The environment you are in affects innovation.

Take Action Activity: Try the “5 Ideas in 5 Minutes” Challenge

The next time you feel stuck on a problem, give this creativity-boosting activity a try:

Step 1: Set a timer for 5 minutes.
Step 2: Write down 5 completely different ways to solve your current challenge. Don’t censor yourself. No idea is too bold, weird, or unrealistic.
Step 3: After the timer ends, review your list. Pick one idea to explore further or combine two into something new.
Bonus: Do this with a colleague or peer to build on each other’s ideas with a “yes, and…” mindset.

This fast, focused exercise helps you shift out of analysis paralysis and into possibility-thinking, right when you need it most.

Use Creative Problem-Solving

Don't let challenges and problems in Q2 cause you to stress, be overwhelmed, or get stuck. Approach your current challenge with creativity.

Use creative problem-solving techniques to get to the root cause, explore options, and move forward with clarity and confidence.
